The internationally renowned painter, printmaker, and found-object artist Moritz Götze (b. 1964 in Halle an der Saale) is regarded as the foremost representative of (East) German Pop. In 2024, he was awarded the Kunstpreis (art prize) of the city of Halle. Influenced by medieval manuscript illumination, comics, and American pop art, his works are always brimming with allusions. He borrows from art- and cultural-historical models and combines those references with present-day themes—some personal, some sociopolitical—to create new and profound layers of meaning. His enamel paintings, colorful figurative works that he sometimes expands into monumental two-dimensional sculptures, are particularly well-known.

For his first exhibition in Nuremberg, Moritz Götze draws direct inspiration from episodes of the tale of Cupid and Psyche, an ancient mythological love story, that are depicted on the famous Tucher Table Service. This magnificent Renaissance service, on view in the museum, was decorated with enamel painting and fired in Limoges, France. Moritz Götze offers a modern interpretation of the imagery on the Tucher Service, infusing it with new life in the form of enameled sculptures installed in the garden of the Museum Tucher Mansion.
