Between adaptation and resistance

Youth under National Socialism

Entry of the HJ flag bearers into the municipal stadium, 1937. Picture credit: Stadtarchiv Nürnberg

The National Socialist regime knew how to inspire young people and fully absorb them. Only a few young people saw through the manipulation and consciously opposed it. Film excerpts, sound documents and photos address the role of young people at the Nazi party rallies and their motivation to join the activities of the Hitler Youth and the Bund Deutscher Mädel, often unconditionally. On the other hand, various sources shed light on the possibilities of youth resistance, which was extremely diverse in examples such as the swing youth or the activities of the "White Rose".
