Presentation of original prints by Dürer in the Albrecht Dürer House

The Original Dürer! series, which was launched in 2021 to mark Albrecht Dürer's 550th birthday, is being continued with seven original prints on the theme of Mary: From 25 November, six engravings depicting Mary and a woodcut from Dürer's Life of Mary from the holdings of The City of Nuremberg's Graphic Collection will be on display. The presentation is on view until March 26, 2023 in the Graphic Cabinet on the third floor of the Albrecht Dürer House.

The innovative and technically brilliant works were created between 1499 and 1520 and sometimes show surprising and witty details, such as the moon face that appears to be peeking under Mary's robe or an astonishingly brash Mary reminiscent of Eve. If you look closely, you can discover objects in the woodcut of the Birth of Mary that can be found in a very similar form today in the back Wanderer Room II on the first floor of the Albrecht Dürer House. Friedrich Wilhelm Wanderer had them made based on Dürer's print at the end of the 19th century for the historicised furnishings of the Albrecht Dürer House. The copperplate engraving Mary with the Child at the Wall from 1514 also has a direct connection to the Dürer House, as Dürer most likely drew the view of Nuremberg Castle in the background from a roof window in his house.
