Presentation of Dürer's portrait engravings in the Albrecht Dürer House

The Original Dürer! series continues with portrait engravings of important men from Dürer's time. From July 21, Dürer's six portrait engravings from the holdings of The City of Nuremberg's Graphic Collection will be on display in the Graphic Cabinet on the third floor of the Dürer House. The presentation will be on display until November 19, 2023.

Between 1519 and 1526, Dürer created six portrait engravings of important men of his time. They bear witness to Dürer's personal network of humanists and rulers. These powerful men of the Renaissance strove for fame that would outlast their own death. The portraits were intended to depict them as recognisable individuals and at the same time idealise them. Their aim was to show the person and their social position, to build an image and to create a lasting memory. The portraits were thus staged for posterity. Prints in particular lent themselves to the increasing demand for portraits due to the high number of copies. Dürer signed them with his monogram, his unmistakable trademark. In this way, the artist linked the memory of those depicted with the memory of himself. Dürer created monuments on paper with the genre of copperplate portraits.
