Photos of Dürer tattoos and statements from tattooed individuals and tattoo artists

This participatory exhibition displays photographs of contemporary international tattoo art and shares the personal stories behind them. In response to a public call, we received over 300 photos and statements from around the world. Some of the tattoos were even created specifically for this exhibition project. The selection presented here illustrates the wide range of motifs, most of which are inspired by Dürer’s graphic prints and drawings. The act of scratching and engraving the tattoos can also be seen as a continuation of the printmaking techniques practiced by Dürer.

Through these Dürer tattoos, the work of the long-deceased artist remains alive today. The medium also creates a contemporary connection that resonates with many different people, inviting a diverse audience to experience the museum as an inspiring place for encounter and exchange.

For reasons of privacy and copyright protection, no photographs may be taken inside the exhibition.

A bilingual catalogue (German/English) will be published to accompany the exhibition.
