Coinciding with the Venice Biennale, this exhibition recalls Albrecht Dürer's journey to Venice from 1505 to 1507. Ten letters written by Dürer to his closest friend, the eminent humanist Willibald Pirckheimer in Nuremberg, have survived the passage of time. Seven of these are held at the Nuremberg City Library.
The letters recount Dürer's life in Venice and that of his family in Nuremberg, offering an insight into their friendship and revealing many personal detail.
Two of the letters are on display in their original form, whilst a third is shown as a 19th-century facsimile. The exhibition is complemented by original prints by Dürer and Marcantonio Raimondi.
In the foyer, the artist Bogi Nagy displays artefacts and artworks from her pilgrimage to Venice, which she undertook on foot in 2025, following in Dürer's footsteps, thereby drawing a link to the present day.
