The historic consultation room

The numerous tasks conjoined with the Nuremberg Trials (1945-49) took up not only the world-famous Courtroom 600, but also the entire courthouse on Fürther Straße in Nuremberg. The entire complex consists of three buildings; the eastern building (known as the Ostbau) originally housed the Schwurgericht, a court reserved for serious criminal offenses and staffed by jurors or lay judges. One of the special architectural features is a room adjoining the Courtroom 600: the consultation room. The judges used it to consult about verdicts and sentences of trials. The wooden table is the centre of the room and has probably been in use since the court opened in 1916.

The room and the table got there world-famous renown in being used by the judges of the International Military Tribunal (1945-46). It is also the place where the verdict of the Nuremburg Trial was discussed.

Apart from its significance as the location for the prosecution of the crimes of nazi-germany and for the development of international civil law, there is an additional remarkable feature of the building. Built alongside and in mind of judicial reforms in the German Reich like the Gerichtsverfassungsgesetz 1877 the architectural design of the building reflects these innovations. The consultation room also mirrors this architectural implementation of the new jurisprudence.
